A team of academic researchers show that a new set of attacks called 'VoltSchemer' can inject voice commands to manipulate a smartphone's voice assistant through the magnetic field emitted by an off-the-shelf wireless charger.

This is wonderful - it puts me in mind of “They Live” 😀)) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/They_Liv…
@Unabart thankfully I do not need a car. Lucky me.
BTW this reminds me of the movie They Live
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/They_L…
@Unabart This is unfortunate for you that you need a car and that they use screens with polarised light so many sunglasses can render them unusable. Unfortunately, this issue does not disappear with OLED. Of course this can be avoided with another type of sunglasses, but that can be quite expensive when you need special ones tailored to your eyes.
BTW thanks for reminding me of this issue. I would have missed that otherwise.
Three polarizing filters: a simple demo of a creepy quantum effect
Crossing two linearly polarizing light filters blocks the light. But adding a third polarizing filter at a diagonal angle lets light through again, but only...YouTube

Most OLEDs use polarizers and wave plates to reduce reflections which would otherwise come from internal components. You lose brightness (~50%), but gain contrast. This is one of the reasons why the efficiency of OLEDs is lower than one might naively hope.
Here's one model: optics.ansys.com/hc/en-us/arti… (Note that the front of the display is at the bottom of the diagrams, and unfortunately the OLEDs themselves are left out.)
now I'm wondering if there'd be some way to make glasses that block any polarized light, without any electric parts, to always block displays, independent of their rotation. At least I remember from physics that you can't just use two polarized lenses 90 degrees rotated over each other as that would block all light.
Any other way to achieve this? Maybe via some prisms and mirrors?
For the full fashion experience, I can recommend polarized Originals from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polaroid… 😀
So those "adblock glasses" with 90° rotated glass they sold on Kickstarter a few years ago would not have worked on them?
No perfect solution yet. Sigh

"Several prominent antifascist organizers and journalists have had their accounts suspended in the past week, after right-wing operatives appealed directly to Musk to ban them and far-right internet trolls flooded Twitter’s complaints system with false reports about terms of service violations."
People banned include:
antifascist researcher Chad Loder (journa.host/@chadloder@kolekti…)
video journalist Vishal Pratap Singh, who reports on far-right protests
the Elm Fork John Brown Gun Club, an antifascist group that provides armed security for LGBTQ+ events (kolektiva.social/@efjbgc)
CrimethInc, an anarchist collective
"All four accounts had been singled out for criticism by Andy Ngo, a far-right writer whose conspiratorial, error-riddled reporting on left-wing protests and social movements fuels the mass delusion that a handful of small antifascist groups are part of an imaginary shadow army called 'antifa.' In a public exchange on Twitter on Friday, Musk invited Ngo to report 'Antifa accounts' that should be suspended directly to him."
How anyone can continue using Twitter is beyond me.

Yes, I understand the reach of Twitter, too. But Twitter doesn’t have a CISO, has a skeleton crew for a security, privacy and moderation teams, and a CEO who has restored accounts belonging to Trump, et al., reversed its ban of Covid misinfo, has been publicly praised by representatives of China and Russia, and as you reported banned left-leaning accounts that haven't violated any ToS.
Is there anything that would convince you to sacrifice your reach in favor of stopping your support of this toxic platform?
I'm not trying to preach or be selfrightious, just trying to understand the thinking of people I respect.
@hacks4pancakes @ogtrekker yeah absolutely. It's a great question!
I guess I don't fully understand the benefits of boycotting Twitter. Twitter is clearly getting much worse, and with any luck the site will crash and burn before too long. But in the meantime, deciding to fully boycott Twitter sort of reminds me of anarchists boycotting voting -- I understand the ideological argument for it, but in the short term, considering my following there, it's still a useful tool, so why discard it yet.
Is it really true that boycotting Twitter increases the chances of Twitter crashing and burning? It seems to me that the new management is clearly trying to drive Black, disabled, trans, and progressive users and their supporters away. As Sarah Kendzior says, the right wing *wants* people to leave.
So it's clearly hostile territory, but abandoning it gives them what they want.
@martinvermeer @hacks4pancakes @ogtrekker I see. So while cruelty, racism, transphobia, etc drives engagement and revenue on other media, and boycotts haven't led to any changes, you think the dynamics will be different with Twitter.
What are the examples you're thinking of where boycotts by progressives of social media sites with a large audience have had an effect?
@jdp23 @martinvermeer @hacks4pancakes @ogtrekker We all know that with social media, YOU are the product. When you tweet, like, retweet and DM, you are increasing Twitter's product inventory, which helps them attract advertising revenue. Social media sites die all the time, as evidenced by Freiendster, MySpace, et al. The reason these sites died was they lost their critical mass, depriving them of network effects.
Maybe we could turn your question around by asking: What are the examples where continued use by progressives caused a social media site that's corrupt to its core to reform?
Continued use of Twitter by progressives obviously won't cause it to reform, but it will continue to spread progressive messages to a much wider audience than is possible without it. That's the conundrum.
